Originally part of the Polatsk principality, Minsk became capital of the Minsk principality in 1101. During the next three centuries the city developed into an important trading center. As Minsk became more pivotal to central Europe, control of the settlement shifted between rival powers. In the 14th century, Belarus came under the rule of Lithuania,<a href="http://www.sneakerslead.com/" target="_blank">Nike Dunks</a>, and Minsk found itself under Lithuanian control. In 1569 the city came under Polish domination when Lithuania united with Poland. Minsk remained under Polish control until 1793,<a href="http://www.sneakerslead.com/nike-air-max-92/nike-air-max-ltd-582/" target="_blank">Nike Air Max LTD</a>, when the city was annexed by Russia as a result of the second partition of Poland. Napoleon’s armies ravaged Minsk in 1812, but the city was rebuilt. Minsk enjoyed renewed prosperity in the 1870s as a rail hub along the Moscow-Warsaw and Liepaja-Romny lines. <br />Marxist parties began organizing in Minsk as early as 1898. The city developed into a focal point of ideological agitation as the Russian Revolution of 1905 unfolded. During World War I (1914-1918) German troops occupied Minsk. After the defeat of Germany in November 1918,<a href="http://www.sneakerslead.com/air-jordan-1/air-jordan-spiz" target="_blank">Air Jordan Spiz'ike</a>, Soviet Russian troops took control of Belarus. In 1919 the Soviet authorities named the city the capital of the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. <br />During World War II (1939-1945) Minsk was devastated by German occupation. Between 1941 and 1944 German troops exterminated nearly all of the city’s Jewish residents. Soviet armies liberated the city toward the end of the war, and most of Minsk lay in rubble by the time the Germans were driven out. <br />Under post-World War II Soviet leadership, Minsk evolved as a center of heavy industry,<a href="http://www.sneakerslead.com/nike-air-force-83/nike-air-force-1-mid-124/" target="_blank">Nike Air Force 1 Mid</a>, and urban growth subsequently mushroomed. Between 1959 and 1989 the population of Minsk nearly tripled as people from rural areas streamed into the city seeking jobs. <br />By the late 1980s centralized planning and low wages had choked economic growth, and disintegration of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) spurred effort in Belarus to shift from a centralized economy to a market economy. This transition has not been entirely successful. Minsk became the capital of independent Belarus in 1991.
