Unfortunately for Joseph, his parents did not always treat him with the loving kindness and tenderness as they ought. Joseph, it seems, was a trial to all who knew him due to his lack of intelligence or particular skill at anything. He did not fare well in school, was forgetful, and was easily distracted from tasks at hand. (It is possible that had Joseph been alive in modern-day times, he would have been tested for Attention Deficit Disorders!)

Humble Beginnings
At the age of seventeen, Joseph got it into his head that he should join a religious order after encountering a begging friar. Since he was not good at anything else, Joseph reasoned he could, at the very least, do as the poor friar was doing in the world. However, his poor scholarly aptitude almost guaranteed that no order would take him. His strange behaviour didn't help matters, either, as he was known to suddenly cease whatever activity he might be involved in and fall to his knees in some strange state of consciousness.
Joseph didn't seem to be useful for anything at all, and his family considered him a burden. The beautiful thing about Joseph, though, is he maintained a cheerful disposition in spite of all his shortcomings.
Joseph would be reprimanded for these strange occurrences, but always accepted any penance imposed upon him as being rightly deserved. Eventually, the Franciscans determined that the religious life was not for Joseph, and he was dismissed. It is related in the book 'Saints for Sinners' by Alban Goodier, (courtesy EWTN) that Joseph declared that the day they took away his habit was the hardest day of his life.
