An Entertaining take on Classic Horror
Influenced from the beginning by several movie and TV genres, This Halloween special raises the bar and pays homage to horror conventions with undeniable effectiveness. Being obvious fans of all things creepy, the writers of this show have modelled their career on this unique style of black comedy since the days of The League Of Gentlemen. Psychoville continues this great tradition, and provides viewers with a welcomed treat, maintaining a sharp comical handle whilst mercilessly wielding the ability to shock and unnerve.
Recalling a traumatising childhood experience, a grown up Drew returns to the derelict interior of Ravenhill Hospital, now accompanied by a ghost hunting TV producer. It's there that chilling stories of the unwitting patients of Nurse Edwina’s cruel domain are recalled,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the hapless investigators are soon to realise that their own lives may be in an equal amount of danger.
So ensues a roller-coaster of chills, laughs and unimaginable twists, telling four tales of unsettling hilarity that feature grumpy clown, Mr jelly, obsessive toy collector, Mr Lomax, and serial killer crazy mother and son, David and Maureen. With varying consequence, they become immersed in plots of revenge, murder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the occasional monster, all collectively celebrating the Halloween festivities with a sinister and highly entertaining narrative.
Also featured at the end of this hour long one off is a short preview of the second series of Psychoville,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is set to be shown in 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and continues the perpetuating mystery established in series 1. Old favourites come together with a set of new characters, and a wealth of surprises, chills and laughs will no doubt follow in one of the BBC’s most original comedies.
Shearsmith and Pemberton, along with Dawn French and a cast of other actors bring these often ridiculous but 3 dimensional characters to life with a high energy liveliness. Using the aid of disturbingly lifelike make up, the bizarre cast of Psychoville come instantly alive, enthralling, disturbing and engaging audiences with a theatrical potency.
Though a comedy in essence, seekers of something scary this Halloween may find their appetites satisfied in this special episode, whilst Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton uphold their reputation of being among the most original and imaginative writers in TV today.
