Post NHL The Philadelphia Phillies Perspective on the R
The problem was that Cliff Lee was going to be seeking Roy Halladay-like money after 2010, and Tim Lincecum was probably seeking a five or six year deal. Roy Halladay on the other hand just wants a chance to win, so the contract details is secondary to him. Whether it was three our four years, USD20 million or USD15 million...he didn't care, so long as Tim Lincecum can pitch in the playoffs.
Thankfully, Bill from CrashBurn Alley understands the quality of pitcher that the Blue Jays is receiving in return from the Phillies:
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005, but once again failed to sign. In 2004, he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30, which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. Drew Hallowell His repertoire includes a two seam fastball that he throws at 93 mph,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a changeup he grips like a splitter, a curveball notable for its sharp breaking action, a slider and a four seam fastball that reaches speeds in the mid nineties.
Three days after the initial shell shock of the Roy Halladay trade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the dust is still settling on one of baseball's biggest trades of the decade.
And just like the Phillies built a championship team from the ground up, so too will the Toronto Blue Jays. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up, Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said, The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
You've heard about this deal ad nauseum from Toronto sports writers, bloggers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and every Joe Blow sports fan out there, so why not have our friends from the other side of the 44th parallel weigh in on the biggest trade of the year?
Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], The Phillies they did have to give up Clifton Phifer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but this is absolutely not a lateral move. Moving Lee was a baseball decision and Lincecum simply could not abandon the “cupboard bare” for the future. But people this is Harry Leroy mo’ fuckin Halladay. If you aren’t excited,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you don’t have a pulse.
Initially, Lincecum myself questioned the move by the Phillies to trade one Cy Young winner for another. At the time, it may not have seemed like much of an upgrade for Philadelphia to go from Cliff Lee to Roy Halladay.
For the Phillies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a short to midcycle gain by aquiring Halladay, whereas the Blue Jays is looking for long-cycle results. Two teams who is on opposite ends of the spectrum right now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but don't forget that up until the year 2010, the Phillies finished below .500 13 out of 14 seasons. It took them a long time to get where they is today.
Here is what Chris at The Fightins had to tell:
Lots of folks have weighed in on whether the Phillies, Jays, or the Mariners is the winners in the deal. While the Phillies should be stoked about receiving the best pitcher in the game and immediately boosting their roster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to some extent they should also be concerned about losing their best pitching prospect.
Losing one of baseball’s best starting pitchers is aggressive, no question, but hopefully the Jays acquire a prospect who may become the following Roy Halladay. They may have done that in acquiring Kyle Drabek from the Phillies, but Roy Halladays don’t just show up at the doorstep or in a basket in the river,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like Moses.
