Geocaches must be approved by park staff before being placed. Contact the park with your request. You will need to follow national parks guidelines for the cache container [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and complete two documents for park staff: (1) the note to be included in the cache and (2) the Cache Information form required by Parks Canada (available for download here).
Because of their sensitive nature, parks with a Zone I (Special Preservation) status do not allow geocaching. Geocaching in the other four zone types is considered acceptable at a national level [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there are several guidelines that geocachers must be aware of, as well as exceptions to the rule that apply at individual parks.
Trade items are not allowed in caches. This prevents a cache from containing items that may attract wildlife. Instead, messages or stories about the location may be included to explain the significance of the cache location.
Public discussions between Parks Canada and geocaching organizations resulted in another win for geocachers. In addition to creating national guidelines, a number of parks recognized geocaching as a new and vital offering to their park activity program. Several national parks have developed their own geocaching programs for visitors, shaping the geocaching experience within the park to align with other park programs.
All caches must be accessible from trails or other public access areas within the park. Just as you cannot set up a tent, or start a campfire anywhere you wish in a national park, geocaching must occur in approved areas so parks do not sustain undue damage.
Geocachers pay all applicable park fees.

National Parks Geocaching Programs
The most important rule to remember: some parks may not allow geocaching. Parks Canada geocaching guidelines state that, “While geocaching is embraced by Parks Canada at the national level, it is important to note that the activity may not be permitted at all of Parks Canada’s locations.” At the end of the day, it is the decision of individual parks to accept or deny geocaching within their boundaries. Make sure to contact the park in advance to ensure the best geocaching experience.
Geocaching, however, has not always been at home in the national park system. Parks Canada’s mandate to protect sensitive wilderness areas has sometimes conflicted with the desire of geocachers for newer, unusual geocaching locations. Through careful consultations over the past couple of years, however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the two groups have worked together to develop Geocaching Guidelines for Canada’s national parks. And, in some instances, the discussions have resulted in special geocaching programs in Canadian national parks.

As geocaching with GPS devices gains popularity, geocaching in Canada’s national parks is more in demand. With excellent hiking trails and scenic destinations, national parks are a huge lure for this technology-based treasure hunt.

When creating its geocaching guidelines for national parks, Parks Canada had to consider the unique needs of its 42 national parks. Each park belongs to one of five zones: Zone I (Special Preservation), Zone II (Wilderness), Zone III (Natural Environment), Zone IV (Outdoor Recreation) and Zone V (Park Services).
