As the crew grows closer to their destination, a number of problems arise, and it soon becomes abundantly clear that the mission is in dire jeopardy. Tensions builds steadily throughout as personalities, philosophies, and ideals clash, and the ship becomes shrouded in a cloud of panic, paranoia, and fear. The ensemble cast which includes Cillian Murphy (28 DAYS LATER) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rose Byrne (TROY), Chris Evans (FANTASTIC FOUR), Michelle Yeoh (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON), and many others, handles Alex Garland’s complex script extremely well [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and makes the film far more than your average perils-in-space tale.
The star of SUNSHINE is not a member of the cast, but rather Boyle’s brilliant vision of the final frontier. CGI has rarely looked so dazzling, and even if the story had been lackluster, the visuals would be worth the price of admission. As he did in 28 DAYS LATER, Boyle uses music to aid in his storytelling, effectively heightening the drama without a word of spoken dialogue. It’s to his credit that the production never becomes lost in the vast emptiness of space. Everything, from the glowing shots of the majestic Sun, to the gorgeous enormity of the mammoth ship, is an unprecedented commentary on the director’s unparalleled vision.

What sounds like a typical sci-fi adventure is anything but. By accepting the mission (the same mission that has failed once before) the crew realizes that the fate of the entire human race depends upon their success. In addition [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the journey will take them a number of years; that’s months of forced solitude while the planet collectively holds their breath. It isn’t long before the time away from home and the magnitude of the mission begins to weigh heavily on the mindset of those aboard the enormous vessel.
The DVD of SUNSHINE is loaded with special features, all of which heighten the entertainment value of 2007’s most under-appreciated film. Boyle’s commentary over the movie and it’s numerous deleted/extended serve as candid and valuable lesson’s in the struggles of big-budget filmmaking. There is also an hour worth of behind-the-scenes docs, but these fail to provide the merit and insightfulness of the director’s commentaries. It’s to his credit that Boyle takes the time to discuss and analyze his production. And despite the number of wonderful films he has created in the past, with this latest towering achievement, his future has never looked brighter.
