Post air jordans 2011 Manic Street Preachers @ The Engi
Bradfield and Wire appear at ease from the first minute, jovial in between songs, and showing hips that aren't so tricky and joints that are still loose, opening with You Love Us, Motorcycle Emptiness and new single It's Not War at 100mph before even taking a breather to introduce themselves. Maybe it was just to prove to us all they hadn't lost it with age.
Many in this crowd have certainly seen the highs and lows of Wales' finest, while others may be aware more recently of their much easier listening. The reason being that the Manics have just released perhaps their most accessible and upbeat long player: something accessible for all those Buble fans among the crowd. This is the Manics over-40, and as part of their sold-out autumn tour of the UK, Lincoln is on the agenda.
Typically its a venue that the band may have been more accomstomed to before their stadium filling-era and proves they will always be one band who will keep their feet firmly on the ground. Over a thousand enjoyed this gig tonight, but more importantly the Manic Street Preachers still love making music and still strive to put on the show of their lives every night. Twenty years on the Manics are still at the top of their game.
Tonight however, many are welcoming back their heroes of some twenty years. Pre-game we see retro t-shirts circa Holy Bible [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the talk of how If You Tolerate This.. has never been their best song, yet somehow their only number one single to date, and the certain calmness before a gig that would be fitting at An Evening With Michael Buble.

And the new songs still prove a hit with even the oldest, hardest cynic that is your back-in-the-day Manics fan. Postcards From A Young Man and Hazleton Avenue have hints of nostalgia about them and a more modern Manics feel [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet sit comfortably alongside old favourites such as Faster and Roses In The Hospital.

The Manics finest moments however, come when Bradfield takes to the stage alone for an acoustic take on La Tristessa Durera abnd You Stole The Sun From My Heart. The frontmans shows tremendous ability to fill a stage alone with his brilliant vocal assault on both songs, whaling out each chorus like the mad busker he once was.
'It's my first visit to Lincoln - and thank you for such a beautiful city!' The Manic Street Preachers have never been to keen to make easy friends in the past, so such a comment is likely to sit well with this crowd [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which for the most part seems largely localised. In a city populated largely by students you'd expect a census of most gigs here to reflect that fact.
