Few fictional characters evoke an emotional reaction just from saying their names. Even non-viewers of 24 revere him as the patron saint of toughness and heroism.

The age-old question of: “Do the ends justify the means?” has been answered with an emphatic “YES!” by Jack Bauer. Over the series’ run, he has been willing to go to any length to stop the terrorists’ plot. Critics complain that Jack Bauer’s use of torture to obtain information justifies torture. But they fail to realize that torture is one of the nicer things Jack has done.
From the very first episode, where a petite woman seated on an airplane next to a suspicious German man ended up blowing up said airplane to advance an evil plot, 24 took suspense and unpredictability to new heights. The plot would reveal twists and turns which defied every cliché and trope in the book. Although the villains were shown carrying out their plot, there were always other forces at work, unseen. The shock value was not limited to big explosions. Ethical dilemmas came to fore on a regular basis.
